Overview

Teaching Building 44 at the University of Southern Denmark is a new building of 8,000 m2 built by TC Anlæg as turnkey contractor. The building meets the Danish Energy Agency’s requirements for Building Class 2020 and is part of SDU’s research into energy efficiency and the international research project ‘Coordicy’. The head of the research project and Leader of Center for Energy Informatics at the University, Professor Bo Nørregaard Jørgensen, estimates that OU44 is at the top of the international world rankings of energy efficient buildings.

In the tender documents from University of Southern Denmark and The Danish Building & Property Agency was given strict requirements for the building’s low energy consumption. When Natural Greenwalls was contacted by TC Anlæg there was a lot of focus on the planned green wall’s energy use for irrigation and lighting.

TC Anlæg was not aware of Natural Greenwalls and our system for plant walls prior to the cooperation on the 204 m2 plant wall for the University of Southern Denmark. Fortunately Ulrich Grønning could present a plant wall system which we believe is the most energy efficient on the market.

Water consumption is minimal. The plant wall only needs to be watered 1 to 2 times weekly. The power consumption is extremely low since the engineering system only uses power those few minutes where the plant wall is watered. The lighting solution is also energy efficient as energy-saving LED lighting are setup in places where the plant wall does not receive enough daylight.

The building is referred to as an unusually successful construction with very low energy consumption which we are extremely proud to be a part of.
